PLM or ERP for apparel: the difference and what to start with
"We need a system to get organized" — that's how the conversation starts with most growing brands. Then it turns out that everyone means something different by "system": some want to manage tech packs, some want stock levels, some want the money side. Behind these wishes sit two distinct classes of software: PLM and ERP. They're often confused, and sometimes the wrong one gets bought. Let's sort out who is responsible for what.
In short: what each system is about
PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) is about creating the product. How a style is conceived, developed, fitted with a tech pack and specification, taken through samples and approval, costed, and sent into production. It's the "left half" of an item's journey — before it becomes a finished good in stock.
ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) is about running the business. Stock levels, purchasing, sales, accounting, money, taxes. It's the "right half" — what we have, how much, where, and at what price.
The boundary runs roughly where a style is ready for production and sale. Up to that point, it's PLM territory; after it, ERP.

As you can see, the overlap is small — mostly around production orders. Otherwise the systems do different work and don't replace each other.
Why ERP doesn't replace PLM (and vice versa)
A common mistake: "we already have an ERP, why do we need PLM too?" An ERP system knows perfectly well that there are 240 hoodies in stock at a given price. But it doesn't know what that hoodie is made from, which tech pack it follows, what the revision history was, and why the cost is exactly what it is. For ERP, the product appears already finished — but all of an apparel brand's pain lives before that moment: in development, tech packs, samples, and approvals with the factory.
The reverse is also true: PLM takes a style through to production, but it doesn't run your accounting and warehouse. So in a mature business they work together: PLM hands the finished specification and costing over to the ERP, and the ERP then drives purchasing, stock, and money.
Where a growing brand should start
If you have to pick just one first, here's the guideline:
- Pain in the product (tech packs get lost, versions get muddled, costing is unclear, development is chaotic) → start with PLM.
- Pain in operations (stock doesn't reconcile, purchasing and sales are a mess, accounting is on fire) → start with ERP.
For most apparel brands and marketplace sellers, the early pain is in the product: the number of styles keeps growing, tech packs drift apart, the factory sews from the wrong version, and costing is calculated once a quarter through heroic effort in spreadsheets. A marketplace seller also needs to connect the product to marketplace economics — and that's PLM territory, not classic ERP.
Don't confuse it with PDM
Sometimes a third acronym joins the conversation — PDM (Product Data Management). It's a store for files and versions: "the correct folder with up-to-date tech packs." PDM is a special case and, in essence, a slice of PLM without process management. If someone offers you a "PDM," ask whether it includes stages, costing, and work with factories, or whether it's just a file store.
Conclusion
PLM and ERP are not competitors but neighbors: the first is responsible for creating the product, the second for running the business. Their boundary is the moment a style is ready for production. For a growing apparel brand or marketplace seller, it usually makes sense to start with PLM: that's where most of their pain and losses are concentrated — in the product.
